Commercial Underwriter

  • Conducts in-depth review of balance sheets, income statements and tax returns, business plans and projections presented by applicants to assess their ability to generate income sufficient to repay existing and proposed debt
  • Prepares written summary of commercial loan terms and conditions and a written narrative explaining business background, outlining risk factors and justifying assigned risk rating, ensuring conformity with credit union credit policy and procedures and with applicable credit union regulations. 
  • Ensures thorough knowledge of cash flow analysis, ratio analysis and projections as well as commercial loan structuring and documentation, commercial real estate appraisal techniques, field audit examination techniques and Credit Union regulations governing commercial banking to ensure accurate underwriting.
  • Interfaces effectively with all levels of Credit Union professionals and vendors including loan officers, credit managers, loan closers, appraisers, accountants and auditors to ensure loan to ensure accurate underwriting and provide Superior Member Service.
  • Identifies risks and assures in structuring the loan to mitigate risks, assigns loan risk ratings.
  • Provides documentation for any exceptions to established guidelines and critical account information relating to the final underwriting decision.
  • Recommends alternate credit structures or products that eliminate the policy exception and protect the Credit Union’s interest when necessary.
  • Assists in developing plans to improve profitability and gathers pertinent competitive information to assist in developing recommendations to product development.
  • Provides support in a mentoring role to other team members within the commercial real estate department, providing underwriting philosophy, guidance and training on transactions that exceed team member authority levels.
  • Maintains all underwriting quality standards.
  • Ensures full compliance with UNIFY Federal Credit Union Service Standards, policies, procedures and the Bank Secrecy Act.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.



  • Minimum of 5 years of commercial underwriting with prior commercial banking experience
  • Requires a working knowledge of commercial loan files and the relevant documents contained therein and all governing regulatory laws and guidelines including but not limited to NCUA, SBA, USPAP and CPCU, CIC, AU, UCC regulations
  • Requires excellent analytical and attention to detail skills
  • Excellence in oral and written communication with proven strength for personal engagement
  • self-motivated with clear results orientation and a capacity to operate independently, appropriately balancing short, medium and long term objectives.
  • Must have proficiency in spreadsheet and word processing software applications.
  • Bachelors Degree Preferred
